Minister Attacks Channel 4's Sex Education Film Aimed at Five- Year -olds

Minister Attacks Channel 4
The Government has urged Channel 4 bosses to cut explicit scenes from a sex education video used in thousands of primary schools.

Schools Minister Nick Gibb summoned executives from the state-owned TV channel to a special meeting, saying parents would be ‘shocked and surprised’ by parts of the film.

He also criticised councils for recommending the Channel 4 Learning DVD.

The film includes a section aimed at children as young as five asking them to name the body parts on a drawing of a naked man and woman.

Another segment intended for eight-year-olds shows a naked cartoon couple chasing each other around a bedroom with a feather before having sex.

A narrator describes the activity as ‘fun and exciting’.

A Mail on Sunday investigation has found the film is recommended or listed among teaching material by at least 20 councils, including Sheffield, Dudley, Swindon, Wolverhampton and Greenwich.

Although it is thought to have been used in thousands of schools after consultation with governors, many parents say that they were not made fully aware of its graphic nature.

Tory MP Andrea Leadsom, who alerted Mr Gibb to the DVD, said the film was ‘like a blue movie’.

She is calling for sex education material to receive cinema-style age ratings.

Education Department sources said Mr Gibb ‘did not like what he saw’ in the DVD and held a ‘robust discussion’ with Channel 4 executives in April.

Mr Gibb said yesterday: ‘Parents will be shocked that this type of material is present in primary schools and even more surprised that councils are recommending it.’
